Tower Hotel London - Lift Equipment Removal and Replacement
tower hotel - london
The Brief
In December 2021, we were asked to be involved in removing and replacing a bank of Four express Gearless units, Replacing them for TK Elevator gearless units as part of the modernisation works our client was carrying out on the lifts in a busy London hotel.
We were asked to carry out the following:
All enabling works, including the removal of two large concrete trapdoors
Assistance in the installation of various Lifting eyes
Installation of a large steel Gantry in the lift motor room
Provision of all Lifting equipment
Provision of Test weights
Removal and replacement of all machines, pulley wheels and bedplates
When we arrived on site, the trapdoors reacted of large concrete slabs had been screeded over, making them impossible to open up without breaking and lowering them out of the building; this was carried light straight away, Allowing an access route for all equipment to be brought in and out of the motor room and plant room areas.
Next, a large bespoke designed steel gantry was brought up in pieces in the motor room. It was then constructed above the machines, ready for the first gearless unit to be lifted and lowered from the motor room.
The Lift cars were positioned at the top of the shafts, core holes for suspending the lifts were drilled, and the Counterweights were set on size two super props. The cars were then tackled and de-roped.
Pulley wheels on the car, weight and wheelhouse were then removed, ready for refurbishment.
The gearless units were then split and lowered through the first trapdoors into the plant room area, Then moved carefully through the plant room area, ready to be lifted and lowered down into the goods lift lobby.
The redundant machines were transported down to the ground floor using the goods lifts and cleared from the site.
The new machines and the new machine rafts were then delivered to the site.
All equipment was removed through the double trapdoors and lifted into the motor room. Machine rafts, pulley wheels and new machine units were installed and prepped, ready for the lifts to be re-roped.
