Recently we were contacted by one of our clients who asked if we could help carry out some lift machine changes, on short notice in Wigan, being London based we had to check our availability to make sure we had the required engineers to travel and work away, Once this was confirmed, we scheduled ourselves in and arrived on site with 3 days notice.
The brief
The works we were instructed to carry out were as many machine changes as possible on a large estate in Wigan, due to some delays caused by some other labour previously on site, our team is known to be extremely capable when it comes to giving certain projects the push that is needed to help targets to be reached.
We carried out 3 large machine replacements on 3 14 floor tower blocks in the space of 4 days, Supplying all the lifting equipment required from our own large hire fleet of equipment, the counterweights were positioned on props and the cars tackled and de roped to allow these works to be carried out.
An obstacle that we came across straight away is that our client wanted to retain the main hoist ropes on the lift to use on the new machine, only for one journey to lower the car into the lift pit area and hang the counterweight in the top of the shaft to allow the car to be replaced, The issue was that nobody had foreseen large concrete bedplates were existing in the motor room and had to be removed, also meaning that new rope holes would have to be core drilled to allow the rope centres to be achieved on the new machine and bedplate. Being experienced lift engineers our team saw and highlighted this to our client straight away and de roping was agreed.
First we took delivery of 3 new Ziehl abegg gearless units weighing around 700kgs, these were transported to the top floor of each tower block and stored behind barriers while the motor room removal works were to be carried out.
The 45 year old geared units were split and lowered through the double trapdoors, using Two ton chain blocks and a tractel minifor, the steel bedplates and concrete bedplate bases we also safely lowered down. All of the equipment was positioned onto pallets to be safely taken away from the building. Next All of the metal material was safely removed from site and recycled, Our company is a licensed waste carrier, and the concrete bases broken and disposed of into a skip. Oil was drained and disposed of in our own oil tank at our unit that will be recycled when the tank is full.
Next the new steel bedplates were lifted into the motor room using our two ton chain blocks and one of our many tractel minifors, These bedplates were then constructed and ready for the new machine to be installed.
The lift machines were then brought beneath the trapdoor area and carefully lifted up into the motor room area, using 1 ton beam trollies these were transported through the motor room on the tested existing lifting beams and tackled then bolted down onto the new steel bedplates.
Our client mainly uses us for lift removal services but in this case utilised our experience in the installation of lifts and lift equipment, They were left satisfied with 3 projects pushed on in a very short amount of time leaving their installers to continue with the projects being carried out. The motor rooms mentioned were completely cleared of all redundant equipment making the areas a clean and safe working environment for engineers working on site.
